I’ll be honest with you: I’ll never forget the pain of some of my breakups because I was shattered. I didn’t have anything else to lean on, and I thought the person I lost was the most important person in my life. If you don’t feel strong enough to let go right now, you are 100% normal. It’s unnatural to step away from the people we love, no matter how unhealthy they are or how badly they treated us.
Stop what you’re doing
This may seem like a weird tip on how to heal a broken heart, but it will help you pass through the grieving process. If you’ve recently lost a boyfriend or husband you love, you’re at the beginning of several stages of grief. Maybe you’re in shock or disbelief. Maybe you’re in denial that the breakup really happened. Take a moment to stop, and feel what you’re feeling. Are you angry, scared, disappointed, or relieved?
Whatever stage you’re in, you are probably also feeling weak and vulnerable. You’re raw from crying or hoarse from screaming. Maybe you’re exhausted from lack of sleep, or feeling bloated from eating too much of your favorite comfort food.
Allow yourself to feel weak
This is your time to break down. Let the little girl who lives inside you come out. Let her cry, have a temper tantrum, stomp her feet, fall on the floor in a puddle of tears and weeping. Let her out, let whatever emotions she’s feeling run wild.
Collapse. Turn your heart inside out. Cry as if your mom is holding you, your dad is watching over you, and your friends standing guard at the door. Go to a safe, private spot in your home and have an emotional breakdown.
Know you are not alone
One of the best tips for healing a broken heart is to find solidarity. Read through the comments section on my posts – especially the articles about letting go of someone you love and learning how to emotionally detach from someone you care about.
You’ll see that you’re not alone. Other women are facing heartache and loss, and they’re learning how to be strong and healthy. They’re moving forward with their lives…and if they can learn how to heal their broken hearts, you can too.
Let yourself be loved
Do you have a spiritual connection to God and a personal relationship to Jesus Christ? Knowing God is the most valuable, precious, effective way get through life in this world. We were created to be in relationship with each other, with Him, and with nature. If your connection to God is broken, you’ll never be at peace with others or the natural world.
A strong spiritual connection is most important tip on how to heal a broken heart because it taps into the hole in your soul. If you think your emptiness comes from this breakup, you’re wrong. You know you’re wrong because your boyfriend or husband didn’t feel the hole in your soul! Sure, he occupied your heart and mind for awhile…but you know deep down that something is missing from your life.
That something is God. He created you with a space in your soul that only He can fill.
Learn what closure is
The most important practical tip on how to heal a broken heart is to get closure. This means finding a way to process your emotions and say good-bye to your relationship. Simply breaking up isn’t closure; closure is about grieving your loss so you can get ready to move forward in your life.
Closure can be complicated for women who haven’t been taught how to end relationships well. I was definitely one of those women! I was taught to run away from conflict and avoid the pain of facing heartache.

How to heal your broken heart
May you take time to stop what you’re doing, allow yourself to feel weak, and know you’re not alone. Allow yourself to be loved by God. Take time to bow your head and pray for healing, strength, and courage. I pray you find the wisdom and power you need to apply practical advice to your breakup, such as learning what closure is. I also pray you make time to connect with God and allow His love, joy, and peace to fill your heart and soul.
