What do you buy your boyfriend’s mom, your husband’s dad, or your partner’s parents? A birthday or holiday gift that doesn’t clutter up their home, attic, or garage! Finding the right gift for his mom and dad depends on three factors: their lifestyle, your relationship with them, and the length of time you’ve been dating your boyfriend.
The Teabloom Complete Blooming Tea Set is at the top of this list of “what to buy your boyfriend’s mom” because I know a woman whose daughter-in-law bought it for her. She uses it every week, when we gather at her house for a home group through our church. It’s a lovely gift for your boyfriend’s parents because it’s pretty and creative and useful. Best of all, it’ll please his mom (because you’re probably more concerned with buying something his mom will like). If your boyfriend’s mom is happy with your gift, then everyone will be happy.
This tea set is beautiful; the tea leaves open up and Blossom into flowers when hot water is poured in the teapot. It’s a fun, practical gift idea that even non-tea drinkers will enjoy playing with. It’s an especially lovely gift if your boyfriend’s mom and dad are older, and you’re searching for gifts for elderly parents who have everything. These 15 gifts for your boyfriend’s parents cover all three factors – they range from personal to practical, but still thoughtful.
I originally wrote this article two years ago, and just updated it now because of my weekly home group. The people I meet with all have adult children who are married, and I’m getting a really good look at how parents, parents-in-law, and grandparents feel about their families! It’s fascinating to be on the inside like this.
For example, last night I learned that many parents and grandparents still feel lonely – even if they have 11 grandchildren and three adult children who live nearby. Their kids are off living their lives, and the senior parents and grandparents feel lonely.
So, when you’re deciding what to buy your boyfriend’s mom and dad – or your husband’s parents – remember that they just want more of their son. Give his parents gifts that encourage togetherness.
Gifts, Tips, and Ideas for Your Boyfriend’s Parents
If you don’t know his parents well – or if you’ve only met them a couple of times – you may have no idea what to give them! Worse, you may feel anxious or even afraid of giving the wrong gift. Don’t let anxiety or fear overwhelm you.
Give a gift from your heart, and show that you care about their son. These gifts for your boyfriend’s parents won’t cause offensive or harm, and will show your creative spirit.
Loose Tea Sampler
An Assorted Variety “Tea Chest” Loose Tea Sampler is one of the best gifts for your boyfriend’s mom and dad because they can share it when friends and family visit. It’s fun to explore different types of tea – and this is something his parents may not buy for themselves.
Want to Blossom in faith?
There are 28 different tea samples in this chest, which makes it a gift that keeps on giving 🙂 They’re single servings and portable, which means your boyfriend’s mom can take them when she visits others. Many of the teas in this collection are organic, and they’re easy to use. Simply open the pouch of tea, empty its contents into a teapot or infusing basket, and pour hot water over the leaves to steep the perfect 12 oz cup or pot of tea. This is a gift you and your boyfriend’s mom can enjoy together.
A Gourmet Coffee Sampler is always an excellent gift – such as the Bean Box Gourmet Coffee Sampler. Good coffee is another gift that your boyfriend’s mom and dad may not buy for themselves, and they can proudly share it with guests.
A Digital Photo Frame That Your Boyfriend Can Load From Far Away
The NIX 18.5 inch Hi-Res Digital Photo Frame with Motion Sensor is thoughtful because it allows them to “go with” their son on his adventures. It’s one of the best gifts for a boyfriend’s parents – especially if he lives far away. And, you get credit for bringing them closer together 🙂
This digital frame is fantastic because you can send pictures direct to the frame from your iPhone or Android phone, which means you can share what you and your boyfriend are doing, quickly and easily. The frame receives photos directly from email, iPhones, Android and phones. It can also access photos from Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox, and Picasa.
Wine Gifts for Your Boyfriend’s Parents
One of my favorite gift ideas – which I’m getting for my husband’s mom and dad this Christmas – are the Wine Glass Writer Metallic Pens. They’re not just for wine glasses – you can write your name or a message on highball glasses, beer steins, or even coffee mugs.
Include a Vacu Vin Vacuum Wine Saver (which is a Number One Bestselling Gift Idea!) and a nice bottle of wine, and you have classy gift for your boyfriend’s parents – whether it’s his mom’s birthday or Christmas.
Your boyfriend and his sisters or brothers are good sources of ideas for gifts for their parents. Don’t just ask them for gift ideas…instead, find specific gifts that you think might be good to give. For instance, is a wine writer and stopper a good gift for your boyfriend’s parents – or are they recovering alcoholics? Asking for feedback on specific gift ideas will make it easier to find the right gift for your boyfriend’s mom and dad.
If you know your boyfriend’s parents well, it’ll be easier to find the perfect gift idea because you have an idea of their likes and dislikes. If you don’t know your boyfriend’s mom and dad, then you need to find gift ideas that aren’t too personal.
A Gift Basket for Parents Who Are Hosting Dinner
The Wine Country Gift Baskets – Ghirardelli Tower is a perfect gift for parents you don’t know well, especially if they’re hosting a holiday party or dinner.
It includes an assortment of milk and dark chocolate squares, chocolate chip cookies, dark chocolate caramel popcorn and more. I spend every holiday with my in-laws, and both my husband’s parents love getting gift baskets! We sort through the assorted offerings; my father-in-law especially loves the gift baskets that include salty treats, such as gourmet seasoned almonds, assorted cheeses, sausage, and olive and pimento cheese dip, mint chocolate wafer cookies, and other gourmet snacks.
This a practical gift for your boyfriend’s parents because it’ll help feed the family. They’ll appreciate it!
Personalized Calendar With Pictures of Your Boyfriend
On a related note, a Personalized Photo Calendar Kit is a lovely gift for parents. You can create the calendar yourself, using photos of your boyfriend that his parent’s hasn’t seen yet (tasteful ones of course, that make them proud!).
I used VistaPrint to create calendars for my Little Sister, husband, his parents, and my mom last Christmas. I’d do it again in a heartbeat — I just have to remember to take more photos of them.
Good Organic Gourmet Coffee
Kicking Horse Dark Whole Bean Coffee is a solid, delicious cup of java! If your boyfriend’s parents are coffee drinkers, they’ll love it. You might also consider a Starbucks coffee gift basket, but Kicking Horse is better. It’s fair trade, shade grown, and organic – and everyone needs good coffee at home.
Coffees and teas are my favorite gifts to receive at any time of the year, because I can offer them to people who come to my place to visit. I especially love sampler bags of tea, so my guests can pick what they want to drink. Good quality coffee is a good gift for your boyfriend’s parents even if they aren’t coffee drinkers. Why? Because they serve coffee to guests and family members. And, if you’re a coffee drinker this gift allows you to enjoy a delicious cup of java when you’re visiting them 🙂
Hawaiian Coffee and Tea – a Tropical Gift for His Mom and Dad
The Coffee and Tea Gift of Kona Hawaiian Coffee and Tropical Tea is a beautifully wrapped and presented coffee and tea gift. His parents will recognize the “Ernest Hemingway” name on the tropical tea, and will also recognize the Hawaiian theme.
You’ll see coffee and tea on almost all of my lists of good gifts and tips because they’re both practical and personal. Good coffee and interesting tea flavors can be shared with guests, friends, and family – and they’re a wonderful conversation piece. It doesn’t even matter if your boyfriend’s parents aren’t big coffee or tea drinkers; this gift is meant to be shared and enjoyed with others.

A Beautiful Vase and Flowers
Normally I don’t suggest stuff or knick knacks as gift ideas for anyone, much less your boyfriend’s parents (unless you are 100% certain they love getting knick knacks!). But a Gifts & Decor Galaxy Art Color Swirl Glass Vase Home Accent Decor is gorgeous. It’s made from hand-blown glass and layered colors of green, blue, and purple, and has a polished flat bottom for secure standing.
Add a Flowering Fields Bouquet, and your gift is complete. If you add a bouquet of flowers, make sure it doesn’t come with a vase.
Art isn’t usually a good gift to give people because it’s so taste-dependent. That is, what you think is art may be very different from what your boyfriend’s parents think is art! But a hand-blown vase is different because it can be put away. 🙂 If your boyfriend’s parents hate this gift, they can just store it in a cupboard.
A Yoga, Painting, or Sushi-Making Class With You
I don’t spend enough time with my mother-in-law, even though she is an awesome woman. And, I am so grateful to both her and my father-in-law for raising my husband to be the man he is! Giving a gift of gratitude, such as a gift certificate for a painting or yoga class together, would be an awesome idea for my in-laws.
If you’re close to your boyfriend’s parents, you might consider giving his mom an experience you can do together. Your boyfriend’s dad probably doesn’t care too much what gift you give them, but your boyfriend’s mom will. A gift idea that offers you the opportunity to spend time together would probably be appreciated very much!
The All-New Fire HD 10 Tablet is an especially perfect gift for his mom if she’s seen and asked about your own digital devices. Even if your boyfriend’s parents already have a Kobo or iPad, they will appreciate getting a newer, updated version. If his mom and dad like to read books or ask Google a quick question – such as what gift ideas are good for their son’s girlfriend 🙂 – they can easily and quickly turn their Kindle on.
This is a much more expensive gift idea for your boyfriend’s parents than, say, coffee or a vase…but it might be more thoughtful. It’s light, contains thousands of books, movies, tv shows, games, and magazines, and comes with free Kindle Unlimited.
His ‘n Hers Slippers
Sorel Men’s and Women’s Slipper should be at the top of this list of gift ideas for your boyfriend’s parents! Slippers are good because most people wear them around home, and if not appreciated at least they’re not big, bulky, and in the way. They can be shared with guests – in fact, I have a basket of slippers that my guests wear when it’s cold or rainy outside.
By the way, slippers are also an awesome gift idea for boyfriends, especially those who are the “slipper type.” My husband has worn his slippers thin, and is always happy to get a new pair.
Dinner for Your Boyfriend’s Parents
An Olive Garden Gift Card – or a gift card to a restaurant near their home – is a good gift for his mom and dad to enjoy together. Who doesn’t like to be taken out for dinner? There are dozens of gift certificates for popular restaurants, such as Applebee’s, Chili’s, Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang’s, Red Robin, etc.
I like the idea of giving your boyfriend’s parents a restaurant gift card – and to encourage them to have a meal with their son. Parents never feel like they spend enough time with their kids (generally speaking!). If you create bridges so your boyfriend sees his mom and dad more often, they’ll love you. That’s a beautiful gift to give his parents – and him, as well. Give them space to connect and love each other.
Are you and your boyfriend living in a different city than his mom and dad? A restaurant gift card is a good idea for long distance relationship gifts because it’s small, light, and easy to send by mail. All these gifts can be mailed directly to your boyfriend’s parent’s home, but a gift card is certainly the easiest.
A Flowering Teapot Gift for Your Boyfriend’s Mom
The Juliet Glass Teapot Set by Tea Beyond is at the end of this list of gift ideas for your boyfriend’s mom and dad because it’s just too good not to mention twice. This is a different version than the one above; it’s less expensive because it doesn’t come with everything. That is, it’s not a full tea set.
If you give his mom the less expensive flowering teapot, gift her the Teabloom Heart Shaped Flowering Tea – 12 Assorted Blooming Tea Flowers Gift Set as well.
It’s a garden of beautiful flowering teas! A selection of flavors, ranging from the exotic to the purely delightful: Green Tea and Jasmine, Pomegranate, Strawberry, Rose, Litchi and Peach.
The tea balls are hand-tied and heart-shaped; the creators take great care to ensure every gourmet tea ball is a Blossomy work of art. Hand-picked green tea leaves are carefully tied with delicate flower blossoms to create a unique tea drinking experience that satisfies on every level.
Are you still searching for ideas on what to give your boyfriend’s mom and dad? Think back to the last three or four gifts you gave your parents. Maybe you can give them something you gave your own mom in the past.
The last gifts I gave my parents-in-law were an automatic card shuffler, a gift certificate to the Keg, and a calendar with me and my husband Bruce plastered over every month. They loved all their gifts 🙂
If you have any ideas on gifts for a boyfriend’s parents, please share below! I’d love to add more tips to this list, to give other girlfriends ideas and tips on what to give their boyfriend’s mom and dad for special occasions.
