Google Adsense advertising can be an effective way to promote and sell your book, especially if you’re armed with tips. Here’s what I learned from writing my Google Adsense ad for 73 Ways to Fire Up (or Just Fire) the Muse

Before the tips, a quip:

It can be tempting to make grandiose promises in your ad, but if you can’t follow through, you’ll destroy your business. Be honest and clear about what your ebook offers and how it’s different – and make your mama proud. And, here are eight tips for writing Google Adsense ads for ebooks…

Tips for Writing Google Adsense Ads for eBooks

1. Tweet a few times a day. One of the benefits of Twitter for writers is that it teaches us to write short, concise statements that pack a big punch. And that’s what writing effective Google ads is all about: giving a ton of information in about 14 words – and enticing readers to go clicky-clicky. Twitter is a great opportunity to practice writing.

2. Find a way to get a free trial run with Google advertising. My blogs are hosted through HostGator – and they offer $50 in free advertising on Google. If you don’t have a web host yet, read Choosing the Best Web Host for Your Blog. If you do have a web host but didn’t get the free Google advertising that most of them offer, ask your provider if s/he can hook you up.

3. Study Google ads in your niche. Stop ignoring those Google ads! Find websites or blogs in your niche, and take a close look at the advertising. What makes you want to click? What repels you? Analyzing your response is a fantastic way to learn how to write concise ads, entice readers to click, and sell your ebook.

4. Write a clear, specific, concise ad for your ebook. Here’s what Google says about writing effective ads:

  • Tell why your product or service is different
  • Include prices and promotions
  • Include a call-to-action, such as “buy” or “order”
  • Use keywords in your ad title
  • Choose a destination URL that takes the visitor directly to the product or information in your ad

5. Include the price of your ebook, and special promotions. I hesitated to include the price of 73 Ways to Fire Up (or Just Fire) the Muse ($9.95 – a real bargain!) in my Google ad because I wanted readers to learn about the ebook before seeing the price. So I didn’t include the price the first day my ad ran, and I received a lot of clicks from readers who were curious…but not motivated to buy. It costs me money every time those looky-loos go clicky clicky – money that I don’t want to waste! Here’s what Google says: “If a user sees the price of a product and still clicks the ad, you know they’re interested in a potential purchase at that price. If they don’t like the price, they won’t click your ad, and you save yourself the cost of that click.” So, I revised my ebook ad to include the price.

6. Include a strong keyword in your ad text. It helps to know at least the basics of search engine optimization, and to be willing to experiment with your Google ads. After your ad has run for a few days, find the best performing keyword in your ad group. In my ebook ad, the best keyword is “writers.” Google advises including that keyword in the ad text – especially in the title. This way, when a reader types that keyword and sees your ad, the keyword phrase will appear in bold font. This helps draw the readers attention to your ebook, and can make the difference between “sale” and “no sale”!

7. Use a strong call-to-action in your Google ad. When you’re marketing and promoting your ebook, you need to encourage readers to click on your ad – and you want them to understand exactly what to do when they reach your landing page. Some call-to-action phrases are: Buy, Purchase, Call Today, Order, Browse, Sign up, and Get a Quote.

8. Experiment with a single ad – or test multiple ads in an ad group. Right now, I only have one ad group with one ad for my ebook. Google suggests creating multiple ads in one ad group, so you can experiment with different wording and call-to-action phrases.  This will help determine the most effective way to market your ebook. Google will automatically rotate your ads within an ad group, and will show the better-performing ad more often.

    Those all sound like good tips, Laurie. The other tips I found when researching marketing was that people purchase things based on emotion not logic. I was told to mention the problem in ads (so people can relate) and then say how my product can solve it (using emotion related words). I’m not sure if this relates to Google ads as they are so short there may not be room to connect on an emotional level.
