6 Ways to Promote Your Blog or Books With Your Email Signature

Many successful writers use their email signatures to promote their books or blog links – but that can get a little ho-hum. Here are a few creative ways to add pizzazz to your email signature to increase book sales and blog traffic – whether you’re an aspiring author or a busy blogger (or both!).

Before the tips, a quip:

6 Ways to Promote Your Blog or Books With Your Email Signature

My most favorite idea is including links to recent and popular blog posts — so I saved the best for last…

1. Client testimonials. Here’s a great tip from Michael Martin of Qdosology – he shared this via Twitter: “An ideal email signature is to share a couple of succinct testimonials about you and your work. Someone else shouting about you is more compelling than you doing it!” If you’ve received acclaim for your work, don’t hesitate to paste it where people — especially potential clients — can see it.

2. Quotations. As I was searching for ideas for email signatures, I discovered that Microsoft Outlook offers an application that supplies random quotations. I was intrigued by this (since I love quips!), but decided it was too casual for my purposes. I want my email signature to promote my writing and even increase my blog traffic, so…random quotations don’t do it for me.

3. Book review. If you’re a published author, consider sharing a recent (positive) book review. This is similar to the “testimonial” idea – but it’s about your book, not your writing services. A sentence or two in your email signature is an effective way to promote your book; a paragraph or more is too much.

4. Blog review. You don’t need to be a published author or experienced freelance writer to share a positive review of your blog or Web site! If someone has mentioned your blog in a positive light – even just one or two words of praise – consider adding that to your email signature.

5. New and most popular blog posts. This is my most favorite creative way to use my email signature, and I just started doing it a few days ago. My signature now includes a few links to my most recent blog posts, as well as my most popular blog posts. Here’s what a sample email to my literary agent looks like:

Dear Special Agent Jon Sternfeld,

I hope you’re doing well, and not too cold over there in the Big Apple!

Just wanted to let you know working on my “Quips and Tips” book proposal, and I think you’re going to love it – and so will the publishers you approach. We’re gonna start a bidding war, my friend…

Your favorite client,

  2. If you want your email signature to show the latest post from your blog, try Wisestamp. It allows you to put your RSS feed and then it inserts the title of your latest blog post in your email signature.

    Thanks for bringing this to my attention — I hadn’t thought of corporate Spam filters filtering out emails with too many links! That’s definitely a drawback, especially if you’re emailing editors, sources, experts, etc who don’t know you.

    I suggest sending a “test email” to someone in a corporation who doesn’t already have your email address in his address book. Ask a friend, relative, colleague, etc for the name and addy of someone you don’t know, send him a polite little test, and see if you get a response.

    I also suggest NOT using the url itself as your link. So, don’t have a “www.com” link by itself. Rather, cloak your url in your blog or book name.

    And, perhaps you could keep your links to a minimum of one or two. Most of the emails I get have at least one link in the signature, which means most people do it, which means most Spam filters must accept it….I think!

    Excellent article! I’ve been contemplating adding links to my email signature, but want your advice on the spam filter issue. I know some spam filters, especially corporate filters that are set on high sensitivity, reject emails that contain too many hyperlinks. Have you run into this? What would you advise?

  10. Promoting your book in your email signature is even more effective if you also use it when posting to Usenet newsgroups. Commercial promotion is a strict no-no on Usenet, but if you contribute useful posts, no one is going to complain about a tasteful signature even if it advertises something. I get a lot of traffic from my Usenet postings.
