Getting pregnant takes preparation for most couples, so you need to know what “preparing for pregnancy” means. These tips are inspired by The Parable of the Mountain Climber – they’ll help you set your emotional and mental equilibrium – because a stable mind, heart, and spirit is what you need when you’re trying to conceive.
An online article can’t tell you everything you need to do when you’re preparing for pregnancy. Get a book like Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy: From Doctors Who Are Parents, Too!. It’s an illustrated book that offers advice on how to get pregnant, meal planning, exercise, medication use, and parenthood. After you get pregnant you’ll love the week-by-week updates on your baby’s growth and the month-by-month changes for mom. You also get a 40-week pregnancy calendar, a “pregnancy symptoms” guide, and a review of important decisions you’ll have to make when you’re pregnant.

These tips on preparing for pregnancy are inspired by a parable. It’s about a mountain climber who just couldn’t let go…and she suffered the consequences of hanging on too tightly.
The Parable of the Mountain Climber
Once upon a time there was a climber who was determined to reach the summit of a high mountain. After years of preparation, she began her adventure. She journeyed alone, because she wanted to prove she could climb the mountain by herself.
She began her ascent. As daylight faded, she decided to continue until night fell. Soon she was overcome by total darkness. The moon and stars were hidden in the clouds, and she couldn’t see anything.
The mountain climber was only a few yards away from the summit when she slipped and fell off a ridge, plummeting at a frightening speed. While falling, she could only see shadow-like figures in the darkness while she felt gravity sucking her down.
She thought death was near when suddenly she felt the tightening of the rope around her waist. She jerked to a stop – her rope was caught on part of the rock wall of the mountain.
In desperation, suspended in mid-air, she screamed, “God, please help me!”
“How would you like me to help you?” said a deep voice.
“Save me!” the climber cried.
“Do you really think I can save you?”
“Yes, God, I do!”
“Well then, cut the rope,” said God.
There was a moment of silence, then she tightened her grip on the rope around her waist.
A few hours later, the sun rose and the rescue team found the mountain climber. She had frozen to death, her hands clutching the rope tied to her waist…and she was suspended only two feet from the ground.
If she had let go, she would have lived.

Compare getting pregnant to climbing a mountain
Part of preparing for pregnancy is combining patience with your plans to get pregnant. Just like climbing a mountain, you need strength, patience, and advance planning if you want to have a baby. Chances are you WILL conceive a baby, especially if you’re preparing your body for pregnancy! It takes most couples a year, on average, to get pregnant. If you’ve been trying for a baby for several months or even a whole calendar year, then you’re an average couple. Have patience, and plan carefully.
Make emotional and physical preparations to get pregnant
By “plan carefully for pregnancy”, I mean getting your financial, relationship, and health ducks in a row. Are you financially prepared to take care of a baby? Is your relationship stable? Are you trying to get pregnant for the right reasons? Are you emotionally mature – is your partner as excited about preparing for pregnancy as you are?

Balance taking action with letting go
In The Parable of the Mountain Climber, the climber had to take lots of action steps towards the summit of the mountain. She trained, gathered all her climbing equipment, set aside time to climb, etc. But, she wasn’t spiritually or emotionally prepared. As soon as she ran into trouble, she leaned on her own strength and understanding. She left God out of it. One of the most important things you can do when you’re preparing for pregnancy is to balance action with letting go of the end result.

Here’s a list of practical steps towards conceiving a baby:

Don’t forget that your partner’s sperm plays a vital role in preparing for pregnancy – make sure he gets a sperm test and sees a urologist. This is all part of healthy pregnancy planning.
