3 Types of Ovulation Predictor Kits and How They Work

Learn how three different types of ovulation predictor kits work, and how they can help you track your most fertile days to get pregnant.

These ways to predict ovulation are easy and effective, and they don’t involve stretching your cervical mucus between your fingers (gross! not that there’s anything wrong with cervical mucus…)

“Ever notice that sometimes your underwear is really wet and sticky?” write Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel in What to Expect When You’re Expecting. “It’s your cervical mucus at work…it reflects the normal hormonal ups and downs of your cycle, which you can use to help you pinpoint ovulation day.”

But checking your mucus and underwear can be messy and icky, which is why I think ovulation predictor kits are the best way to tell if you’re ovulation!

The Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor Test Sticks are popular and effective ways to predict ovulation, so you can have sex on your most fertile days.

Should You Use an Ovulation Predictor Kit If You’re Trying to Conceive?

The short answer is yes, you definitely should. Ovulation Predictor Kits are the best way to know when the egg is coming down the chute. Predicting your ovulation will help you conceive by ensuring that you have intercourse when the egg is ready to meet the sperm.

3 Types of Ovulation Predictor Kits and How They Work

Here are three different ways to predict ovulation (different ovulation predictor kits): fertility monitors, ovulation predictor kits, and saliva tests.

Fertility Monitors

Getting pregnant isn’t all fun and games! You need to time your love so that the egg is ready at the same time as the sperm, which means watching for signs of fertility and ovulation. This can be tricky for some women, and easy for others.

The Ovacue Fertility Monitor predicts when you are ovulating by testing for hormone leves (LH and estrogen) in your urine, giving you a six day window of opportunity. This gives you lots of time to try to conceive a baby — many ovulation tests only give you a 24-36 hour advance prediction of optimal conception time.

You can start with your fertility monitor from day one of your period. So, you’ll test your urine until the monitor tells you when it’s time to start using the urine test strips (they come with the package).

“When you get the heads-up signal from the monitor, you’ll pee on the test strip, insert it into the monitor, and wait for the monitor to indicate whether your fertility status that day is high, low, or at its peak,” write Murkoff and Mazel in What to Expect Before You’re Expecting.

Ovulation Predictor Kits

This is probably one of the best ways to tell if you’re ovulating: I describe them fully in How Ovulation Predictor Kits Work. Ovulation predictor kits can be expensive (I cringed whenever I had to buy them!), but they’re cheaper than other methods…and they’re very effective.

The Clearblue Easy Digital Ovulation Test is the most popular one on the market.

Saliva Tests for Fertility

Saliva fertility tests predict when you’re ovulating by monitoring the levels of estrogen in your system (estrogen rises before ovulation, before the LH surge). By tracking your estrogen levels, you’ll get an early indication of when ovulation will occur – which increases your chances of getting pregnant.

Before you eat, drink, or brush your teeth in the morning, you’ll dab a bit of saliva on the lens of the saliva test. When it’s dry, you’ll look at it with the test’s eyepiece. “When you’re about to ovulate, your saliva will reveal a microscopic pattern that resembles the leaves of a fern plant or the frost on a window pane,” write Murkoff and Mazel. “The rest of the time, you’ll just see random dots. Once you see your fern, get ready to start baby dancing!”

  1. Ovulation predictor kits can be expensive, but they’re worth it. I spent $165 on my test kit, and it helped us predict exactly when to have sex. I didn’t get pregnant, but that’s because of a lack of sperm! Unfortunately, the ovulation predictor kit can’t tell you if a man has sperm or not.
