Natural Ways to Improve Male Fertility – From Herbs to Zinc

There are several ways to improve male fertility naturally. I interviewed a fertility expert and acupuncturist for information on herbal supplements, zinc, and other natural fertility treatments for men.

Fairhaven Health’s FertilAid for Men is a natural way to improve male fertility – but it doesn’t “cure” all male fertility problems.

Here’s what Kristen Burris says about overcoming many male fertility problems: “There are many exceptional options to naturally increase sperm count, quality and motility,” says Burris. “My husband and I both have had considerable success treating male infertility, including poor sperm count, quality and motility. Many of our patients are considered ‘infertile’ by their reproductive endocrinologist when they first see us. After 3-6 months of treatment their counts, quality and motility are all in the fertile range.”

Burris and her husband use acupuncture as a safe, effective male infertility treatment.

Here are Burris’ tips for improving male fertility and increasing sperm count naturally…

Natural Ways to Improve Male Fertility

Herbal medicine can help treat male infertility by improving the general health of the man, using anti-aging components and adaptogenic effects. The herbs also have the ability to regulate the endocrine system, balance hormone production, and treat reproductive disorders safely.

Acupuncture has been proven time and time again to improve sperm in infertile men. A study published in July 2005 issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility found that acupuncture improved sperm quality in infertile men’s semen. In the study, 28 men received acupuncture in addition to traditional infertility treatments, while another 12 men received only the traditional treatments. All of the men were diagnosed with unexplained infertility.

Acupuncture was associated with fewer structural defects in the sperm of men who received it, although it had no effect on sperm immaturity or premature death. Previous studies have also shown a link between acupuncture and improved sperm production and motility.

  • Consider herbal medicine, as it’s effective in treating sperm quality, quantity and motility for many men. Expect a minimum of three months to improve sperm; re-analyze sperm after six months of herbal medicine treatment to ensure it’s working effectively.
  • Eliminate alcohol; it decreases the ability to produce testosterone.
  • Eliminate smoking, recreational drugs (including marijuana), and stress.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise, saunas, hot tub, hot baths, tight underwear and bicycle riding; they lead to increased temperature in the testicles and potentially reduce sperm count. Some research shows that laptop computers are related to male infertility.
  • Take 40-80 mg of Zinc (never more than 100 mg daily), in supplements and food.
  • Take 200-400 iu Vitamin E daily, which helps balance hormone production. Wellness Essentials for Men has 50 iu. Vitamin E is also easy to supplement in your diet.
  • Eat almonds, cold pressed vegetable oils, dark leafy greens, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, eggs, brown rice, kelp, milk, oatmeal, wheat, wheat germ, sweet potatoes and flax seeds.
  • Eat foods to eat to increase sperm virility, quality and production: scallions, lamb, shrimp, black beans, kidney beans, yams, clams and oysters. To learn more, read 5 Foods to Increase Sperm Count, Production, and Motility.
  • Avoid the herbs: Echinacea, ginkgo biloba and St. John’s Wort
  • Avoid these medications (with a doctor’s supervision): Zantac (Ranitidine) and Tagamet (Cimetidine)

Some natural health experts recommend having intercourse every other day for one week during her most fertile time of the month (ovulation). To learn more, read Sex Frequency for Couples Trying to Conceive a Baby.

  1. I had low sperm count a year ago. It was caused by years of chronic prostatitis. I’d tried many natural remedies and foods to improve my sperm count. The one that really helped me was a herbal medicine called diuretic, it cured the inflammation completely. After the function of my prostate became normal, my sperm count improved.

  2. How to improve sperm count? My husband and me have no child……I will try child from 2 year…. so what I do…… plz plz plz plz suggest me

  3. There are no “one size fits all” tips on how to increase sperm count and overcome male infertility naturally. If you’re struggling to conceive a baby, you need to talk to a urologist or fertility doctor in person, and get your man parts tested.

I am 49 years old and planning to have child with 28 years old women. I am diagnosed with low count and motility. I hope these natural ways to improve male fertility will help me.

  5. Increasing your sperm count may depend on why your sperm count is low. That is, if you have low sperm because of an illness or infection, then you need to do different things to increase your sperm count than if you don’t have sperm, or if you’ve always produced sluggish or slow sperm.

The best way to increase your sperm count is to go see a doctor or naturopathic physician. Get tested, and get medical help.

    Hello Edward,
Thank you for sharing your fertility struggles. When a husband and wife both receive treatment from us they are the most successful in getting pregnant. We have already had two births this year where the husbands and wives were taking supplements and herbal medicine prescribed by me and my husband, Tony Burris, L.Ac., M.S.T.O.M. for infertility.

The best advice I can give you is for you to set up a phone consult with him to improve your sperm count. He has had tremendous results improving men’s sperm count through diet, supplementation and herbal medicine. For your wife, she would consult with me.

Each person’s reproductive pattern and assessment is individualized. A personalized diagnosis, evaluation and herbal prescription are essential for individual success. A cookie-cutter approach is not nearly as successful due to the wide variety of patterns that lead up to poor sperm count and fibroids.

Luckily our expertise includes nutritional supplementation, herbal medicine and acupuncture. For local patients they can receive acupuncture and for other patients they can use herbal medicine to improve their fertility. We have treated patients as far away as the United Kingdom. We are able to assess you from anywhere in the United States and drop ship to your home. If you are out of the U.S. we will have to do some research on shipping costs of the natural medicines that are mailed to you.

Please call us (208) 938-1277 to set up your personalized consultation. You may also visit our website listed above and for you click on “Tony’s Intake” and for your wife “Kristen’s In-take” and mail it to our address on our website. This way we will have all the medical information we need to assess your personal challenges with infertility before doing the phone consultation where we will gather more pertinent information. Be sure to add any relevant information that may not be asked on our questionnaire i.e.: sperm count numbers, treatments, surgeries, sizes of fibroids, etc.

I hope this information helps you. We look forward to meeting you and your wife and helping your baby dreams come true.
