The Parable of the Journey to Pregnancy
Once upon a time, a young maiden was on her way to a prosperous city that lay beyond the three valleys. Many people in her village had talked about the city, but none who ventured there had returned to confirm the stories of its greatness.
The maiden walked all day, admiring the rich, green vastness of the valleys. As night fell, she sat and took bread and cheese from her small satchel and enjoyed her simple lunch in the beautiful surroundings. She took out her blanket and settled down for the night. She dreamed about the rich city and how much better her life would be; it was a long and good dream.
As the sun rose the next morning, the dawn chorus of birds in nearby hedges and trees awoke her. The young maiden stretched and put away her bedding and let her eyes drink in the splendor of the valley, which was fertile and colorful.
She continued her journey, and after a few miles saw an old man asleep at the side of the path. The maiden asked him if he needed help.
“I am beyond help but thank you,” said the old man, who was very weak. “I will give you some advice though. Collect as many stones and pebbles as you can before you cross the next river.”

The maiden was puzzled and asked “Why?”
There was no answer, for the old man fell back into a deep sleep. The maiden continued walking.
Why should she collect stones? As she thought of all the possible reasons – as well as the problem of carrying stones in her satchel – she noticed two or three little pebbles in her path. On impulse, following her instincts, the maiden picked them up and put them in her pocket. The last road to the prosperous city was long and straight, and every now and then she picked up a few more pebbles. Her satchel was beginning to get heavy and she had no idea how much further she would have to walk. She decided her satchel was full of enough stones, and that she would tire herself too much if she carried more.
Soon, she reached a wide river that separated her from her destination. The river was not very deep, perhaps waist high, but the current looked strong. There was no bridge, so the maiden braced herself and crossed the river. She struggled against the current, her satchel weighing her down, and almost slipped on two occasions. She finally clambered up the other bank, drenched but thrilled that she crossed the river safely.
Her satchel seemed different somehow – the weight was distributed differently than before. Thinking that water got trapped in the pockets, the maiden stopped to look inside. She couldn’t believe her eyes – the pebbles had turned into jewels and precious stones!
The maiden carried on to the city, only to find that most people were poor. They did not heed the wise advice given by the old man: collect pebbles, for they may become precious treasures.
6 Ways to Increase Fertility Naturally
How is the Parable of the Journey to Pregnancy related to my tips on how to increase fertility naturally? Each tip is a pebble (or a bit of information) that has the potential to become a precious jewel (a baby!). One of these ways to increase your fertility in natural ways will be the way you might get pregnant.

These fertility improvements are from Dr Marilyn Glenville’s book Natural Solutions to Infertility: How to Increase Your Chances of Conceiving and Preventing Miscarriage. “We know that certain pollutants and chemicals in the environment can affect both male and female fertility,” she writes. “There may be many more substances that we come into contact with in everyday life that combine to form a ‘toxic cocktail’ with unknown long-term consequences.”

Remove plastic-covered food as soon as possible
“Avoid, as far as possible, food and drinks in plastic containers or wrapped in plastic – especially fatty foods in plastic,” writes Dr Glenville. “This is because xenoestrogens are lipophilic (fat-loving) and will therefore migrate into foods like cheese and chips.” She recommends removing plastic packaging from the food you eat as soon as possible.
Don’t heat food in plastic
When you’re heating your lunch or leftovers for dinner, put the food in a glass dish and cover it with a paper towel (unless you don’t mind bits of food exploding everywhere!). If you want to know how to increase your fertility level, the first step is to avoid heating your food in plastic containers in the microwave. Even if the plastic container says it’s microwave safe, it’s better to avoid it all together. And, don’t let plastic wrap cover your food.
Eat fibrous fruits and vegetables to improve your fertility levels
Decrease your intake of chemicals and toxins to increase your fertility levels! According to Natural Solutions to Infertility, fiber helps prevent the absorption of chemicals into the body that can interfere with estrogen and testosterone production and functioning.

Wash your fruits and veggies
I confess: I don’t buy organic food and veggies, and I barely rinse them before chowing down. Luckily, I’m not struggling with female infertility (though we are a couple coping with infertility) — but I’ve learned that it is important to at least wash your produce carefully before eating it. This is an easy, inexpensive way to avoid decreasing your fertility levels!
“Washing cannot alter the amount of pesticides inherently absorbed into the vegetables,” writes Glenville. “But peeling fruit can lower the pesticide residue by about three-quarters.”
Eat lots of broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower
Broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower are cruciferous vegetables that are super high in a substance called indole-3-carbinol, which reduces the metabolism of estrogen into a toxic form. Indole-3-carbinol also speeds up the release of toxic forms of estrogen.
Eat soy to increase fertility naturally
I’m not sure about this tip on how to increase fertility naturally, because the research on soy, estrogen, and fertility isn’t conclusive. But, Dr Glenville says soy products can reduce the toxic forms of estrogen in your body. She recommends eating tofu, soybeans, and soy nuts – but don’t go overboard.
