Here are the most important tips for getting pregnant from the National Institute of Health. Some women get pregnant fast, while others have to read and search for tips on how to get pregnant for years before the sperm and the egg unite.

It’s frustrating and sad when you want to get pregnant, but can’t. I know – my husband and I tried to get pregnant for about five years. We went through infertility treatments, acupuncture to improve fertility, and intense prayer sessions. Nothing worked! So, we accept that having our own biological children isn’t meant to be.

But it’s different for you! Most couples eventually get pregnant and enjoy healthy pregnancies.

In this article, I gathered tips on how to get pregnant from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Their information is current, medically sound, and well-researched.

These tips are from a document called Optimizing Natural Fertility by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. They are geared towards couples who do not have fertility issues. If you’ve been diagnosed with infertility, these tips won’t be effective. You need to talk to a fertility specialist about treatments and specific tips on how to get pregnant that relate to you and your body.

If you haven’t been trying to get pregnant for a long time – if this is a new journey for you – then these tips should help!

Know your “fertile window”

The fertile window is the six day interval ending on the day of ovulation. How do you know what your fertile window is? You can check the volume and character of your cervical mucus, or you can get a digital thermometer that makes getting pregnant easier. Digital thermometers are expensive, but they’re less messy than charting the thickness and texture of your cervical mucus!

Have frequent sex

Enjoy intercourse with your partner every one to two days, because that’s the frequency that yields that highest pregnancy rates. However, these medical experts also say that less frequent sex (two or three times a week) have nearly equivalent pregnancy rates. Believe it or not, getting pregnant isn’t an exact science!

Don’t worry about position, even after sex

It doesn’t matter if you’re on top, if you lie with your legs in the air after having intercourse, or if you spend a long or short time doing it…you’ll get pregnant or you won’t get pregnant despite all these attempts at manipulating sperm or egg. It’s a myth that the sperm will leak out if you stand up too soon after sex. And, research shows that sperm can be found in your cervical canal a few SECONDS after ejaculation! Those little guys don’t need more than a minute to race up to meet your egg.

Enjoy your wine and caffeine – within reason

These medical experts say that moderate alcohol or caffeine consumption (one to two drinks per day) has no demonstrable adverse effect on fertility. If you have no reason to believe you’re infertile, then there is no reason to avoid your wine and coffee! But keep it moderate.

Quit smoking, doing drugs, and lubing it up

Recreational drugs, commercially available vaginal lubricants, smoking, and high levels of alcohol consumption are NOT going to help you get pregnant! Avoid those products and activities – they will stop you from conceiving, and they aren’t healthy for you or your baby. If you need lubricant to make sex nicer, use canola oil or mineral oil. Those natural lubes don’t affect the sperm.

Honestly, it seems like the healthier your lifestyle is, the higher your chances of conceiving a baby are. Clean living won’t guarantee that you’ll get pregnant, but it’ll increase the odds!

I think the most important tip for getting pregnant is having sex during your fertile window. You’re ovulating at that time, which means your eggs are ready to be fertilized.
