Different types of naturopathic medicine can treat uterine fibroids and reduce fertility problems for women. Fibroids, endometriosis, and hormonal imbalances can disrupt ovulation and cause irregular periods, which makes it hard to get pregnant.
One of the most important aspects of naturopathic medicine for fertility is a healthy eating plan, supervised by a naturopath.
“Dietary counseling is a foundation to any treatment plan,” says Dr. Agnieszka Matusik, a Burnaby BC-based naturopathic physician who combines nutrition, botanical medicine, acupuncture, and other therapies to treat patients. She uses different modalities for different people, depending on their issues and health goals.

And here’s what this naturopathic doctor says about treating issues like fibroids, which reduce fertility for women.
Naturopathic Medicine to Treat Fibroids and Increase Fertility
Certain “female problems” can cause abdominal lumps, constipation, bloating, painful menstrual periods, and even reduced fertility for women. Uterine fibroids might be the culprit; the Mayo Clinic estimates that 75% of women have these tumerous growths. They’re rarely cancerous and often undiagnosed – but when they are detected, the possibilities for healing go beyond surgery or medications.
Treating female health problems, such as uterine fibroids, naturally can increase fertility for women and help them get pregnant.
Treating Uterine Fibroids With Herbs and Acupuncture
Dr Matusik treated a woman with fibroids with the herb Vitex angus castus (chasteberry) to stabilize progesterone production, omega 3 fatty acids to balance lipids and reduce inflammation, and the supplement Indolplex to improve estrogen metabolism. Dr Matusik also recommended cruciferous vegetables to increase antioxidants and detoxify the liver of excess estrogen. The results? Reduced pelvis pressure and bloating, less menstrual cramping, and regular bowel movements.
“I prescribed castor oil packs for the pelvis to increase nutrients and remove waste from uterine cells,” says Dr Matusik. “These packs also relax pelvic musculature, which decreases cramping.” She also used acupuncture to improve energy and blood flow, and disperse stagnated energy.
Regular bowel movements are also important, as constipation increases re-absorption of hormones back into the body. To treat fibroids naturally, that’s the last thing you want! Dr Matusik made sure there was enough fiber and water in her diet to keep her regular. And, she went for weekly acupuncture treatments to address underlying imbalance diagnosed as “Liver Qi Stagnation.”
Can Holistic Remedies Increase Your Fertility and Help You Get Pregnant?
“A person will know if a holistic health modality will help them heal if they are willing to give it a try, believe in their body’s ability to have a positive response to that modality, and follow a treatment protocol for the time required to create change within the body,” says Dr Matusik. “Usually this means a commitment of several weeks, depending on how long they have a had a particular condition or health concern.”
It’s never too late to make dietary changes — and most people are surprised at how good they feel after reducing intake of sugar, coffee and simple carbohydrates and replacing them with whole, fresh foods.
“I find that women’s health issues respond very well to herbal medicines,” she says. “There are many great herbs that can gently bring about a shift in female hormone levels and promote healing of many women’s health concerns. Acupuncture also works well to balance out hormonal conditions such as fibroids or fertility issues. In any modality used, true healing can only occur if a person is willing to make a change and adjust some aspect of their lifestyle that will promote their health and well being.”
