When interviewing health practitioners for an article for alive magazine, I gathered information about Bowen Therapy for fertility. Here’s how The Bowen Technique helps women get pregnant. If you’re trying to conceive, this may be the natural health modality for you!
Yoga & Meditation for Fertility DVD from Kat Atkinson Yoga is a healthy, natural way to increase your fertility. It’s not Bowen Therapy, but it can help enhance circulation to the pelvis, soften your abdomen so you’re open to pregnancy, and align with your creative, feminine energy. One of the three yoga practices is yoga nidra, which is proven to help dissolve the negative effects of stress, which in turn can impact fertility. It is especially beneficial for women undergoing medical fertility treatments such as IVF, and/or for women experiencing stress and anxiety around conceiving.
On to The Bowen Technique for fertility: Bowen therapy is interesting because the therapist doesn’t stay with you for the whole treatment. For fertility, a Bowen therapist would do a few moves, and then leave the room for two minutes. When she returns, she would do a few more moves and then leave. The Bowen therapy moves are very powerful, and your brain needs time to process the effects before the therapist continues. Isn’t that an interesting way to increase your fertility levels?
Here’s how Bowen therapy for fertility works, and why it could help you get pregnant.
The Bowen Technique for Getting Pregnant
The Bowen Technique is a soft tissue treatment that effectively addresses acute and chronic pain issues such as sciatica, low back pain, knee pain, tendinitis, frozen shoulders, hip pain, skeletal and muscular problems from lumbar to neck, jaw problems, fibromyalgia, asthma, allergies, digestive complaints, sports injuries, infertility, problems getting pregnant, and much more. It is a natural way to deal with the most common causes of infertility.
If I was still trying to conceive, Restoring Fertility by Drs. Brandon Horn and Wendy Yu would be my “go to” therapy. Nothing against Bowen therapy for fertility – I’ve just experienced the healing effects of yoga (but not for fertility), and believe in this type of exercise.
Bowen therapy for fertility resets the body to heal itself. Anyone can benefit from this Bowen therapy, from newborns to elderly, because it is very gentle. Bowen moves are performed over areas of muscles, tissues, tendons etc. that are rich in mechanisms that communicate with the nervous system (such as spindle fibres, golgi tendons, organs, stretch receptors, etc.). Through communication with the nervous system, these structures can monitor and adjust the level of tissue tension in the body. It is as if these moves prompt a response from the body through the nervous system to re-adjust areas of imbalance. And that’s how Bowen therapy for fertility works: it helps rebalance your hormones to help you get pregnant.
Another natural way to get pregnant is acupuncture – read Acupuncture for Fertility and Your Chances of Pregnancy. Acupuncture is a healing modality that can contribute to fertility and getting pregnant, similar to Bowen therapy but with needles.
What is the effect of Bowen therapy? Naturally, fertility and pregnancy is your desired outcome! But while Bowen therapy may increase fertility, there are no guarantees. Bowen therapy alleviates immobility, chronic pain, infertility, structural imbalances, etc. One definite effect observed from Bowen therapy is the balancing of one’s autonomic nervous system.
I don’t know what you’ve tried so far to get pregnant, but your first step should always be tracking your ovulation. You can do it without an ovulation predictor kit, but you’re not as reliable as a Clearblue Advanced Digital Ovulation Test (no offense!). You’re human. This is a digital test of your ovulatory cycle. Unless you are one with your body, you may miss important signals that your eggs are ready to be fertilized by your partner’s sperm.
When I was trying to get pregnant, I didn’t buy ovulation tests for a long time. I thought they were too expensive, and I thought I knew my body well enough to know when I was ready to conceive. Wrong! It’s a worthwhile purchase. Whether or not you’re trying Bowen for fertility, you’ll need to know when you ovulate.
Bowen therapy for fertility can enhance the functioning of the parasympathetic nervous system. Most people seem to be functioning in a chronic low grade sympathetic overdrive (fight or flight, in other words. Stress mode!). Bowen therapy can increase your chances of getting pregnant by relaxing you, balancing your parasympathetic nervous system, and allow your body to heal itself.
The surprising thing about The Bowen Technique is the speed at which most people recover from long term health issues. And, people are always surprised that there are breaks when the practitioner actually leaves the room! This allows the body to respond to the set of moves that has just been performed (and perhaps allows the practitioner to have a smoke break). Bowen therapy gives your body information about its own system, and your body responds. When the practitioner is out of the room, it is easier for the nervous system to initiate a response because there isn’t someone else around.
To learn more about Bowen Technique, read The Eight Concepts of Bowen Theory by Roberta M. Gilbert. The more you know about how Bowen therapy affects fertility, the more comfortable you’ll feel going to a Bowen practitioner.
I welcome your thoughts on Bowen therapy for fertility! Don’t ask me any questions, though – all I know, I’ve just shared. If you have more info on how the Bowen Technique affects women who want to get pregnant, please comment below.
