7 Reasons Men Lose Weight Faster Than Women – Genes to Hormones

Men lose weight faster than women because of genes, emotional eating, hormones,  estrogen, and comfort foods. These reasons why men shed weight quickly are from a dietician and include healthy weight loss tips for women.

“Why is it that a woman only has to look at a decadent dessert to feel the pounds creeping on, while all a man has to do is cut back on portions – or hit the gym a few times a week – to watch the pounds fall off?” asks Canadian dietician Leslie Beck, author of 10 Steps to Healthy Eating: How to Boost Energy, Manage Weight, and Prevent Disease with Food, Diet and Nutrition.

She answers her own question below, with seven reasons men lose weight faster than women. Why Do Men Lose Weight Faster Than Women?

Losing weight is in men’s genes

“Men are genetically hardwired to shed weight faster than women. Men are more prone to build muscle, thanks to higher levels of the hormone testosterone. Because men have more muscle mass, they also have a higher resting metabolism,” says nutritionist Leslie Beck. “Muscle burns more calories than fat, so the more muscle you have in relation to body fat, the higher your resting metabolism.”

Men have less estrogen than women

Men lose weight faster than women because women have more estrogen, which is a hormone that keeps fat on women’s bodies. Estrogen and body fat make it easier to get pregnant.

Men can lose weight through exercise alone

“A study of 962 men and women enrolled in a two-year weight loss program found that exercise alone was enough to help men lose weight,” says Beck. “In women, however, even substantial increases in exercise weren’t enough to produce weight loss if they didn’t reduce their calorie intake.”

Men can eat whatever they want and still lose weight, which is both another reason they lose weight faster than women and another reason I call them lucky dogs.

Men don’t diet as often as women

Dieting slows metabolism – and women are more likely to diet to lose weight than men. Cutting calories burns muscle and triggers hormonal changes, which promotes fat storage…so dieting and fasting is NOT a fat burning tip for females!

Men are more likely to exercise to lose weight

“A male approach to losing weight may also lead to better results. Men are more likely to include regular exercise, which appears to do more than increase one’s calorie deficit,” says Beck. “One study found that men who exercised and dieted had more self-restraint and experienced less hunger compared with men who followed a diet-only program. Women in the study didn’t experience the psychological benefits of exercise.”

Men like different types of comfort foods

Women crave packaged foods, chocolate, sweets, and breads – foods that are easier to overeat. In contrast, men prefer comfort foods that mom used to make: meat and potatoes, and home-cooked meals. This is another reason men lose weight faster than women. Plus, men are less likely to eat for emotional reasons (stress, anxiety, sadness, boredom…which is not a fat burning tip for females).

Men have fewer body image issues

“Women often set out to lose weight in the hopes of improving appearance, while men are more likely to be concerned about their future health and fitness. As a result, men are often less focused on the bathroom scale,” says Beck. “Improvements in strength or a looser waistband are often enough to motivate men to stick to their program. But women tend to beat themselves up over a few extra pounds, which deflates self-confidence and self-worth.”

  1. Although this article has some good points, some of it could be combed through. I would like to ask the author for her sources on some of the quotes…
    Men do usually lose weight faster than women, but it is usually not because of any psychological factors like this article claims. The author of this article has generalized women and put them all in a stereotype of the weak-minded emotional ice-cream gobbler. If you are a woman who is having trouble losing weight, don’t buy into this garbage. Thinking that it’s harder for you to get into shape because of what’s in your mind will only give you an excuse for failure. You are well equipped mentally and physically to live a healthy lifestyle. There is one simple rule for losing weight: Burn more calories than you consume! The basic rule for metabolism is this: The more you weigh, the higher your metabolism will be, because you will need to burn more calories just to pump blood through your arteries. So yes, dieting slows down your metabolism, because it’s working!

    One tip I saw that I really liked was this: Eat home-cooked food, or, as our grandparents called it, FOOD.

My husband use to weigh more when we lived up north for 6 years,now that we are back in rotten florida,he seems to loose weight,more often,he seems to have high metabolism,so he is always doing something,and he eats good. On the other hand,I use to be much thiner and had high metabolism,but since I been sick and really depressed, more so since we moved back to Florida in 11/05,hate Florda now both of us,cause we feel like fish out of water,cause we always lived close to ocean,plus now we live inland, an dit is to darn hot,plus we have terrible neighbors,it’s boring here,and all our friends moved away and hate Florida so much also they refuse to come visit,and both sides of our family are total jerks. And we payed way to much for house in 05,now feel doomed,for who knows when the prices of homes in florida will ever rise,it has caused undo stress and health problems for us,but we can’t sell our house,for we would take to much of loss,and we need the money to put down on another house up north,for the homes up north have not lost that much equatity,so were 100% stressed out all time,for their is no place to go,without being in rotten florida. For at least back home in New England,we are next door to Ma,Ct and not that far from NH or Me.Here no matter which way you go your stuck in Rotten Floraida? Can’t afford to take trip back home cause between either flying or driving,then tolls,and having to stay in motels and eat out for at least 2 weeks,is very expensive,for we have rotten relatives up north an dour friends are odd,so we would rather not stay with them,so we can’t take trip north,not until we can move back,when ever that may be? Sure pray it’s soon.

    1 – Get a firm ‘mental lock’ on the goal(s).
    2 – Fuel your body properly. Balanced and structured for weight loss without sacrificing energy.
    3 – Get physical and take some action.

    With a proper positive state of mind, good dietary choices, and active lifestyle (exercise)…goals can be achieved.
