Whether you’re pleasingly plump, pregnant, full-figured or just plain overweight, you’ll find a good plus size Halloween costume idea in this list! I also included tips for dress-up shopping at thrift stores, in case you’re not the craftiest kid on the block.
Check out the California Costumes Women’s Plus-Size Pirate Wench Costume. It’s an “Amazon’s Choice” – in case you don’t want to make a homemade Halloween costume – but it wouldn’t be too hard to pull off for a creatively crafty woman. But before you jump into this tantalizing Halloween costume for plus size women, always check the return policy. Most online stores will accept returned merchandise, but it’s a hassle to have to re-package and send a Halloween costume back to the store! Some costumes are expensive, and you don’t want to be stuck with a beautiful dress that you can only wear once – or that you can’t wear at all because it’s too small, or too hot, or not well made. When you’re browsing through Halloween costumes for plus size women, always read through the reader reviews and comments.
Finding the right costume is challenging for any woman, regardless of size or shape. If you’re going to a Halloween party and you like to dance, make sure you find a costume that’s loose-fitting, comfortable, breezy and easy. Leave the high heels at home; I myself love the boots on the plus size pirate Halloween costume.
A couple readers emailed me after I wrote my Storybook Characters Halloween Costume Ideas article, asking for ideas for overweight teens and pregnant women. So I did a little research and found these plus size Halloween costumes, plus a few thrift store shopping tips. I hope you find something you like!
Halloween Costume Ideas for Plus Size Women
Start shopping early! Even if October 31 isn’t next week, you should start thinking about your costume soon – especially if you’re planning to make it at home or from thrift store treasures. You don’t want to search for a Halloween costume at the last minute, or you’ll wind up wearing something you don’t really like. Worse, you may find yourself wearing something uncomfortable or expensive.
I don’t know how you feel about being a “plus size woman” (I prefer the terms pleasingly plump or full-figured), but I know it can be tempting to hide in clothes that aren’t pretty. I did that all the time when I was overweight. I remember wearing a Santa Claus costume – complete with beard and hat – because I thought I was too fat to wear a pretty costume. That was before I knew that plus size Halloween costumes for women existed – and that they could be beautiful.
Fortune Teller Gypsy Costume for Women
The Women’s Plus Size Fortune Teller Halloween Costume is available on Amazon, but you could make it at home. The beauty of a costume that’s also a profession or role is that you can use your imagination. You can even combine two different ideas and create your own, such as a Pirate Fortune Teller Halloween.
This is my favorite costume on this list. I’m not into fortune tellers, but I am into gypsies. I fancy myself a gypsy, in fact, and would love to roam the world in a caravan. And this, my friend, is a clue to help you find a Halloween costume idea you love: look at your own loves, passions, interests, and dreams. Don’t think about being plus size, or even trying to find the best Halloween costume. Instead, wear something that represents who you are…or who you want to be. Dream a little! That’s what Halloween is for (for me, anyway).
20s Flapper Halloween Costume for Hip Women
The Women’s Fashion Flapper Costume is the highest rated plus size Halloween costume for women on Amazon – and I think it’s because of the movie All That Jazz (Chicago, more recently). I loved that movie.
This costume is from the same era as the movie Chicago with Catherine Zeta Jones, Rene Zellweger, and Queen Latifah. You could probably find the makings of this Halloween flatter costume at a thrift store. If you buy it, it comes with a black fringed dress and sequined headband with feather. The shoes, stockings, gloves, jewelry, cigarette holder and boa aren’t included…which means you may need to make a trip to your flapper friend’s closet or a thrift store.
Wear a costume you like and feel comfortable in
You won’t have fun on Halloween if you’re focused on being plus sized or you compare yourself to other women. Be gentle with yourself. Treat your body like the beautiful miracle it is! One way to do this is to find a costume you love and can comfortably move around in. Avoid costumes that make you feel constricted, too hot, or unnatural (though most Halloween getups feels unnatural to some extent). Sometimes plus size women and teens feel self-conscious – and those feelings can ruin your fun. So, focus on your comfort and happiness instead of trying to find the perfect plus size Halloween costume.
Use your imagination! “Where there is no imagination, there is no horror,” said Sir Author Conan Doyle. Be creative – your unique self – when you’re searching for Halloween costume ideas. Don’t hide in a shapeless costume made for plus size women who don’t like how they look.

Greek Goddess Halloween costume for plus size women
California Costumes’s Athenian Goddess Costume will make you feel like a beauty queen! The best Halloween best costume for plus size women are ones that fit loosely and comfortably. It’s far better to feel good and happy than to try to look like something you’re not, or hide your body in heavy, suffocating costume layers.
When you’re looking for costumes, keep a list of your most beautiful features in front of you. Do you have gorgeous eyes or a big bold smile? Find a Halloween costume that accentuates your positive qualities.
And, remember that you don’t need to look “sexy” to be attractive. Your spirit, demeanor, kindness, mood and laugh make you a beautiful woman at Halloween – and any time of the year. Who you are is more important that even me most creative, original, award-winning plus size Halloween costume.
Online Halloween search tip: look for DIY plus size Halloween costumes
It took me a long time to figure out the power of DIY – do it yourself – as a search term. If you are a crafty woman, you already know this. Searching for DIY plus size costumes and ideas for Halloween will give you more results, and help you find what you need.
Red Riding Hood Plus Sex Appeal
California Costumes Women’s Plus-Size Dark Red Riding Hood Halloween Costume is an idea to consider. It’s a sophisticated and seductive take on a classic storybook character. The dark red riding hood costume is composed of a one-piece dress, matching long flowing cloak and comes with a plaid black and red hanky. Boots, glovelettes, and basket are not included in the set from Amazon.
Halloween costume shopping tips – thrift stores
To find accessories not included with store-bought or online Halloween costumes, go to a vintage or secondhand store. Thrift stores often have a variety of accessories – and sometimes they even have full costumes for plus size women. It takes a little luck, or even a couple of different shopping trips, but you can find some amazing things at thrift stores. Make it fun, take a creative friend who likes searching for unique, funky costumes.
When I feel creative and crafty, I’ll go to a thrift store to buy Halloween costume accessories and props. They cost less, and you leave the store knowing exactly what your costume consists of. If you do buy a plus size Halloween costume from Amazon or another online store, make sure you get a written warranty. If you can’t return it, make sure you have a guarantee in writing that you can at least exchange it.
Create a costume that represents a plus size person or thing
This idea is for creatively crafty women: wear a Halloween costume that is already made for a plus size woman! Think about the full figured girls, teens and women you have seen on tv or in movies. Not many, I admit, but I recall Princess Fiona from Shrek or Mimi from the Drew Carey show. Those are not the most creative examples because I stopped watching tv a million years ago, but the idea is the same. Instead of trying to find a plus size Halloween costume you can fit into, slip into something already made for a full figured woman.
Truly interesting, original Halloween costumes require time, effort, and planning. I don’t have that kind of patience, so I stick with the online shopping at Amazon 🙂 But if you need DIY Halloween costume ideas for plus and regular size women, read Best Creative Halloween Costumes for Girls and Women.
Cozy Halloween Bat Costume for Women
Leg Avenue’s Cozy Bat Halloween Costume is both comfortable and attractive. Dress up as a cozy black bat in a costume that features a zipper front fleece dress with awesome bat wing sleeves and furry ear hood.
Here’s another Halloween shopping tip for plus size women: be patient, and do your research. If you love the Medieval Bar Maid Halloween costume, look for it on different online retailers. It’s possible that Amazon isn’t the cheapest or best place to buy from. Search the internet for reviews, prices, Halloween costume ideas, and even different ways to say “plus size” such as overweight or pregnant women.
Avoid heavy, hot Halloween costumes
It’s not a good idea to wear an animal mascot or similar heavy costume. Make sure your costume has layers that you can remove if you get hot – especially if you’re pregnant or prone to hot flashes like I am. Also, make sure your Halloween costume isn’t too tight-fitting. You need room to move and breathe!
It’s not easy to try on plus size Halloween costumes when you’re shopping online, but it’s important to try to find ways to ensure that it’ll fit you comfortably. Clothes look beautiful and comfortable in pictures and on mannequins, but it’s often a whole different story in real life.
Middle Ages Tavern Halloween Costume for Women
The Women’s Plus-Size Tavern Maiden Halloween is lovely, strong, and sexy. I love the bodice and boots, plus the comfort and style. And if you have the right clothes in your closet, this wouldn’t be a difficult Halloween costume to make.
What have you always wanted to dress up for on Halloween? Create or buy a costume that suits your personality and dreams, not just your beautiful plus size body. Don’t let fear or the judgment of others affect what costume you decide to wear on October 31.
Browse the thrift stores
I know I said it before, but it’s worth repeating. The Value Village thrift store chain has an amazing selection of Halloween costumes every year – and those costumes fit both regular and plus size women. You will save money, and be kind to the environment by recycling clothes.
If you don’t have time or energy to shop at thrift stores for a Halloween costume, set a budget. Don’t get carried away by these beautiful plus size Halloween costumes for overweight and pregnant women! If you only have $30 to spend on a costume, then keep looking until you find the right fit. Halloween costumes can get expensive, especially when they don’t come with all the accessories in the picture. You may feel tempted to go over your budget, but it’s not worth it in the long run.
Wonder Woman costume
Rubie’s Costume Company’s Secret Wishes DC Comics Wonder Woman Plus Size Adult Costume is an awesome way to assert your power, strength, and beauty on Halloween! It’s available on Amazon for less than $40, and it’s received tons of positive reviews.

And, I read that many Halloween costumes for women run small. This is especially important if you’re a pregnant woman shopping for a plus size costume early, because you may actually grow bigger by October 31 🙂
